Stephen Sparke
I make and fire much of my work in West Wales with Joe Finch but am also becoming something of a travelling potter working in Gloucestershire, Ireland, and wherever else the opportunity to wood fire exists.
I am passionate about wood firing. The effect of fire and ash on the pot, and the subtle range and depth of surface colour and texture, I feel, can only be achieved by this most basic and direct way of firing clay into ceramic.
I love to make vases and other functional items. I am inspired by the natural world around me, Japanese studio pottery, and the work of many other potters including Ray Finch, Harry Davis, Phil Rogers, and John Jelfs.
Most recently I have been experimenting with ash glazes and soda firing.
