Carol Peevor BA Hons
I trained at Wolverhampton Polytechnic (now University) leaving in 1979 with a BA Honours degree in ceramics. Initially I made buttons and jewellery which I sold mail order and at craft fairs. I now only make pots and pictures which are sold through various galleries and exhibitions. All of my pieces are one offs and as my method of making is quite slow I produce a limited amount a year.
I use white clays as it shows my colours to their advantage. Moulds are used for basic form and I often alter or add to these. Any pattern is cut into the leather hard clay with a scalpel. Oxide is applied when the clay is bone dry and rubbed off later. This has the effect of showing up the design as a black outline. At this stage the piece is bisque fired to 1000°C. Under glaze colours are applied now, at least two coats. I re-fire to about 1120°C in an electric kiln giving a hard durable finish.
Ideas for forms and patterns usually follow naturally on from one piece to another, I can name no specific inspirations. Generally my work is non functional.
