Hand thrown ceramics
Peter Cosentino was born in 1951 in Lauria, Southern Italy and came to Britain in 1956.
He trained as a teacher of art and design at Worcester College of Education during 1969 - 73, gaining his B. Ed degree (Art and Design/Ceramics) and then taught for five years in secondary schools in the Birmingham/Solihull area.
He left teaching after establishing his first home studio in 1979 to run the pottery, retail shop and gallery outlet, 'Gallery 21' in Yardley, Birmingham with his wife.
In 1983 he returned to education, (further education) at Milton Keynes College where he successfully introduced the first full time art and design courses and later became Head of Art and Design.
In 1994 he was appointed Head of School of Art and Design at Rugby College where he went on to become an Assistant Principal.
During the period 1985 - 1995, Peter wrote pottery books and had 3 titles published: CREATIVE POTTERY: THE POTTERS' PROJECT BOOK: THE ENCYCLOPEDIA OF POTTERY TECHNIQUE. At the last count THE ENCYCLOPEDIA OF POTTERY TECHNIQUE has so far been translated and published in 9 different countries! After a lengthy period of 'ceramic inactivity' between 1989 and 2005 Peter has recently returned to potting leaving the world of further education in June 2006 to establish his latest studio and is now potting full time, making mostly individual pieces for exhibitions. Influences in his individual pieces can be traced to natural and organic forms with a fascination for the exploration of relationships between shape and balance. A simple matt white glaze is usually used as a base for colouring oxides to be applied, often through netted fabric or in addition to paper resist techniques. His pieces are often constructed from two thrown sections which are altered and joined after throwing.
