Merryn studied pottery at Harrow Art School and was trained by a number of well-known potters, including Michael Casson, Victor Margrie, Colin Pearson, Mo Jupp and David Leach. For thirty-seven years she has had a studio pottery workshop, first in London, then Gloucestershire and, finally, in Birmingham.
Merryn exhibits regularly in the Midlands and especially for many years at the Lichfield Festival. This summer she had a large display in Dore Abbey, Herefordshire as part of the English Choral Experience Festival.
“My porcelain is a quiet contrast to my stoneware range which is unashamedly traditional, with a strong Leach influence. I enjoy working in both. I make up my own glazes from raw materials. Decoration is minimal – I like the form to speak for itself. The pots are ‘biscuit’ fired in an electric kiln and then glazed in a gas kiln with a reduced atmosphere up to 1280°C. In the hope that my work will long outlast me, I try to make pots that are a pleasure both to look at and use.” |
