Finola Delamere’s main interest is in decorated ceramic surfaces in the majolica style. She loves using the potter’s wheel to throw pots such as birdbaths and wall pots for the garden but also builds large vessels –her ‘Standing stones’ using flat slabs of rolled out clay and then decorates these horizontal or vertical surfaces by brushwork. After the first ‘biscuit’ firing, the red clay is coated with a tin glaze. The colour pigments applied by brush then melt into the glaze surface on its second or ‘glaze’ firing.
Finola finds inspiration from her rural environment, a smallholding with open spaces, big skies and a variety of plants and animals that make good subjects for study throughout the seasons. She spends some time drawing her initial ideas on paper until she finds a design that suits the particular ceramic. Contact Finola at www.finspottery.co.uk |
