Jennifer Colquitt

After being awarded First Class Honours in Ceramics from Wolverhampton University, Jennifer taught in several departments in the Faculty of Art and Design, Birmingham City University and was appointed Senior Lecturer in the School of Industrial Ceramics, she taught in the department until 1995.

From 1977 onwards she has always had a studio where she has developed her work. Her main pre-occupation is with making decorative wall panels and firing them successfully. The panels are textured and drawn on while the clay is still soft. The panel edges are important to her so they are never cut rigidly. The main themes in Jennifer’s work are trees, leaves and flowers combined with the playful qualities of Naïve Art. These are introduced into calm imaginary landscapes surrounded by patterns.

Currently the clay being used is a fine quality porcelain. The clay is wedged and rolled into slabs before being cut to the desired size. Designs and patterns are then added. During a course of three firings, colour is obtained with oxides and rich metallic lustres. Porcelain as a material holds a fascination for her since it combines fragility with great strength, enabling it to withstand very high temperatures to achieve its true potential. She loves the endless possibilities discovered when working with clay and enjoys exploiting its decorative qualities.

She produces decorative wall panels, small bowls and jewellery which are sold through galleries, events and exhibitions in the UK and France.

She is a Professional member of the Craft Potters Association. The Midlands Potters Association and The Kent Potters
